Groin and Labral Injuries

About Groin and Labral Injuries

Groin pain can come from the muscles on the inner thigh, the tendons around the pelvis or the hip joint itself. One common hip source is the labrum, a ring of cartilage around the rim of the hip socket that helps cushion the joint and keep the ball of the thigh bone stable.

A hip labral tear can follow a sudden twist or pivot, or develop over time with repeated hip movement, and it is often linked with hip impingement or the shape of the hip joint. Groin strains, in contrast, usually happen with sprinting, kicking or sudden side-to-side movement.

Because these problems can feel similar, an accurate assessment matters. Pain in the front of the hip or groin, especially with deep bending, can come from more than one source.

Signs and Symptoms

A groin strain often causes sharp pain or tenderness in the inner thigh, swelling or bruising and pain when squeezing the legs together. A labral tear may cause a deep pinch in the front of the hip, clicking or catching, stiffness and pain when sitting for long periods, pivoting or bringing the knee toward the chest.

If you have severe pain, cannot bear weight or your hip feels locked, see a physician promptly.

How Physiotherapy Helps Groin and Labral Injuries

Your physiotherapist will examine how your hip, pelvis and spine move, test strength and identify which structures are painful. This guides a plan that fits your injury and your activity.

Treatment may include manual therapy, mobility work for the hip and pelvis, progressive strengthening of the glutes, adductors and deep core, and movement retraining to reduce pinching in the joint. Many people improve with a non-surgical approach.

If surgery is recommended for a labral tear, we work with your surgeon’s protocol to support your rehabilitation.

Getting Back to Activity

We will help you return to walking, training and sport in stages, so your hip and groin can handle the demands you place on them.
