About Finger and Hand Injuries
Our hands do fine work all day, from typing and texting to gripping tools and catching a ball. The fingers and hand rely on small bones, joints, ligaments and tendons working together, which also makes them easy to injure.
Common finger and hand injuries include sprained or jammed fingers, tendon injuries, fractures, and overuse problems such as trigger finger and thumb-base irritation. They can happen with a fall, a sports impact, a workplace accident or repetitive use.

Even a minor injury can leave the hand stiff, swollen and weak. Without the right rehabilitation, that stiffness can linger and make everyday tasks like opening jars, buttoning clothing or holding a pen harder than they should be.
Signs You May Need Care
Look for pain, swelling, bruising, stiffness or a finger that will not fully bend or straighten. Other signs include a loss of grip strength, numbness or tingling, and pain that wakes you at night or returns with use.
Severe pain, visible deformity or a finger that cannot move after an injury should be checked urgently by a physician, because fractures and tendon ruptures need prompt care.
How Physiotherapy Helps Finger and Hand Injuries
Your physiotherapist will assess movement, strength, swelling and how the hand is used day to day, then build a plan to restore function. Early, guided movement is often an important part of recovery.
Care may include swelling management, gentle mobility and tendon gliding exercises, scar and soft tissue work after surgery, progressive grip and pinch strengthening, and advice on splinting or protecting the hand while it heals.
If you have had a fracture or surgery, we work with your surgeon’s or hand specialist’s instructions to progress your rehabilitation safely.
Getting Back to Your Activities
Our goal is to help you return to the things you rely on your hands for, whether that is work, an instrument, the gym or sport. We will practise those movements with you and adjust the plan as you progress.
If a finger or hand injury is slowing you down, book an assessment at Premier Physiotherapy & Sports Medicine in Vaughan, ON and we will help you get moving again.
