Return to Sport Concussion Rehab

About Return to Sport After Concussion

Returning to sport after a concussion is a step-by-step process, not a date on the calendar. The brain needs time to recover, and returning too soon can prolong symptoms and increase the risk of another injury.

A graduated return-to-sport plan moves you from relative rest to light activity, sport-specific exercise, non-contact training and finally full contact and competition, with each stage completed only when symptoms allow.

Physiotherapist assessing a patient’s head and neck after a concussion

Concussion guidelines generally recommend returning to school or work before returning to full sport, and being assessed by a physician before returning to contact or competition.

Signs You Are Not Ready Yet

Headache, dizziness, nausea, light or noise sensitivity, trouble concentrating, unusual fatigue or feeling foggy that returns or worsens with exercise are signs your brain needs more time.

Report any new or returning symptoms to your care team and pause progression until you feel back to your baseline.

How Physiotherapy Helps You Return to Sport

Your physiotherapist will assess your symptoms, balance, neck, eye movement and how your body responds to exertion, and guide you through each stage of the return-to-sport progression.

Care may include a gradual aerobic exercise program, neck treatment, balance and coordination training, vision and vestibular exercises and sport-specific drills.

We communicate with your physician or other care providers so your return is coordinated and medically cleared.

Getting Back in the Game

Our goal is to help you return with confidence and with the strength, balance and endurance you need. Clearance to return to contact sport must come from a physician.
